Worksheets & session plans
Illustrative adult waits with hands in their lap while a tabby approaches an open carrier with the door removed.
The cat can approach or leave. Follow the carrier maker’s instructions before removing or securing a door for supervised practice.Teaching illustration.

Lesson duration includes reading, planning, worksheets and reflection. Optional cat practice is brief, voluntary and stops at the first sign of discomfort; the listed minutes are never a confinement or handling target. Fictional cases and observation-only activities count: no cat has to participate for a score.

Choose something this cat values, notice one voluntary action, then give the prepared reward promptly and pause. The cat can leave; never withhold essentials.
training-0125 min study

Choose rewards and set up a willing learner

Prepare short, voluntary practice around what your individual cat values today.

Open lesson
Observe the voluntary behavior, give one quiet marker at that moment, then give the prepared reward promptly. A marker is not a repeated command.
training-0225 min study

Make a marker clear: timing, reward, pause

Practice the caregiver’s timing first, then introduce a quiet marker that reliably predicts a reward.

Open lesson
Choose a target or a mat. Build a target from looking to approach to voluntary touch, or a mat from looking to approach to stepping on. Either way, leaving ends practice.
training-0330 min study

Build a voluntary target and a comfortable mat

Use tiny steps to teach a nose target or resting station, with a genuine option to leave.

Open lesson
With the carrier stable and its door secured open, a cat may approach, enter voluntarily or leave. Keep the door open throughout this lesson; do not add lifting or travel.
training-0430 min study

Make the open carrier an ordinary choice

Create a stable carrier setup and a patient entry plan that never turns a reward into a trap.

Open lesson
Door movement, brief duration, lifting and travel are separate future steps. Pause and check comfort between changes. Return to an easier step or ask the veterinary team for help; a deadline is not readiness.
training-0530 min study

Add carrier-door movement and plan a calm journey

Separate door movement, brief closure and transport into distinct steps, with veterinary help when preparation is difficult.

Open lesson
Check comfort before each familiar touch. Invite, offer one tiny already accepted touch, then pause. Turning away, tension or leaving means stop, even before contact. Re-entry needs a new comfort check.
training-0630 min study

Introduce cooperative care with a real pause button

Practice a tiny familiar touch with the cat’s continued participation, and leave procedures and painful handling to the veterinary team.
